初到外國生活，人生路不熟，常常會迷路。雖然手機有導航地圖，但所謂「路在口邊」，如果能現時請人指路，還是最方便的。美國人指示路的方向是有特別的用語，不容易聽懂。現為大家預備一些問路的用語和名詞，希望有所幫助。
一﹑指方向的用語
「往前走」可以說成： Go straight ahead或Go straight on。
「向右轉」可以說成：Turn right、Take a right或Make a right。加上路名的說法：Turn right into Redwood Road或Take a right on to Redwood Road。「在第一個街口往右轉」則是Take the first right或Make a first right。
「向左轉」就把上面句子的right換成left就可，例如Take a left；Take a left on to Camphill Road； Make a first left等。
把以上這些加起來可以說成：Go straight on and take the first right，就是「往前走到第一個街口往右轉」的意思﹔或是Turn right into Camphill Road and take the first left就是「向右轉到 Camphill Road 後在第一個街口往左轉」的意思。
「走上山」是Go up the hill，「走下坡」是Go down the hill：「走過橋」是Go over the bridge；「從橋底下過」是Go under the bridge；「過馬路」是Cross the street。
「沿著Elm Street走」可以說成：Follow Elm Street或Go along Elm Street。加上「直至你到了加油站」，可以說：……until you get to the gas station。
圖書館就在加油站的「對面」是：The library is opposite the gas station. 也可以是：The library is across the road from the gas station.
「在路的左/右邊」是It’s on the left/right hand side of the road。
「走過了公園」是：Go past the park。
「穿過公園」是：Go through the park。
「走近公園」是：Go towards the park。
「旁邊」可以說成：beside或next to。例如：「在商店旁邊」可以說成：beside the store或是next to the store。
二﹑行車常用的名詞：
One-way street：單行道
Two-lane traffic：雙線道
Freeway / Highway / Expressway：高速公路
Ramp：匝道
Fork road：三叉路口
Crossroad：十字路口
Block：本來是指連在一起的建築物，但也是街口的意思。
Stop sign：停車標誌
Traffic lights：紅綠燈
Pedestrian crossing：人行橫道
Railroad crossing：平交道
Tunnel：隧道
Roundabout：迴旋處
Parking lot / car park：停車場
